These are the same institutions that use your personal disclosures against you in salary negotiations, that factor in how desperate you sound when deciding how little they can offer, and that will replace you with someone cheaper before your farewell card finishes circulating. They want your personal life as ammunition, not as connection. But yes, absolutely, tell them about your beach trip. Build that rapport.

The part that should make everyone's eye twitch is that none of this has anything to do with job performance. He is pleasant, collaborative, funny, and very good at the job they are paying him to do. The problem is not his attitude. The problem is that he will not hand over a personal inventory that has absolutely nothing to do with designing apps and everything to do with mapping out exactly how much he needs this job and how hard he can be squeezed.

Keeping your work and personal life separate used to be called professionalism. Somewhere along the way corporate culture repackaged basic boundaries as a personality disorder, and now the guy who just shows up, does excellent work, and goes home is the suspicious one. Incredible system. Really firing on all cylinders.
