Remembering your childhood feels… weird. There's a strange sensation inside your body that is created when nostalgia meets anguish, happiness, and some other type of feeling. The thing that impacts the most, of course, the fact that there are not going to be days like that anymore. As days go by, we're only getting older, and the good old days are even further from the present.
I don't want to be a boomer and make you feel sad… although I'm not sure if I'm succeeding in my job. What I'm trying to say is that I understand what you feel when you look back in time and remember the feeling you felt when you got home from school, grabbed a snack, and go sat in front of the TV to watch the same show day after day.
The older I get, the more I realize that what I miss isn't one specific moment. It's the feeling that came with that stage of life. Everything felt bigger back then. Summer vacations seemed endless, birthdays felt like the most important event of the year, and making plans with your friends was as easy as knocking on their front door and asking if they wanted to play outside. There was something incredibly comforting about not having to think too far ahead.
I also miss how easy it was to be excited. A new toy, a sleepover, a school field trip, or even getting to choose what cereal to eat on Saturday morning could completely make my day. Those little things carried so much happiness because life wasn't measured by deadlines, bills, or responsibilities. Looking back now, it's amazing how much joy fit into such ordinary moments.
At the same time, I don't think childhood was perfect, and maybe that's why it feels so special now. That's probably why looking back always feels a little bittersweet. We aren't just remembering who we were. We're remembering a version of life that we'll never experience in quite the same way again.
