It's not a strange thing at all to feel connected to pieces of fiction. Shows like Gilmore Girls are a safe space for many of us. We know the characters like we know our own families, we can repeat entire pieces of dialogue, and we choose them time and time again when we need a bit of self-care. That's why we're so sad when they take them off our streaming platforms. It's like we're losing a little piece of ourselves. So when Netflix announced they were removing Gilmore Girls from their streaming services, as a fan, my heart dropped. Where would I watch my beloved feel-good show now??
[SPOILERS AHEAD!]
We saw Rory getting into Chilton, then graduating from Chilton. We saw her going to Yale, then drop out of Yale and then go back again. Not that the storyline about her joining the 'Daughters of the American Revolution' club and planning that huge party wasn't great, but c'mon, she had so much more in her than that. Not that party planning isn't a noble thing to do (she was quite good at it after all), but still. Anyway, I'm rambling, where was I? Oh, right, knowing the characters. We started the show with a teen Rory and we finished it with her as an adult. We saw Sookie and Jackson get together and raise their children. Jess, going from a troubled kid to a well adjusted and published writer. And we saw Lorelai and her conflicts with her parents, her coming and going with Christopher (no one can stand that guy, right?), and her relationship with Luke. Oh, Luke, the man you are. Why, oh, why did you have to lie to Lorelai about April? She would have been your biggest helper and your greatest supporter! Well, if they moved on eventually, so can we.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who spent countless hours in front of the TV, binge watching season after season with a bowl of ice cream and a warm blanket. There's something about this show that makes you feel at home, and the autumn and winter seasons wouldn't be the same without it. So let's Gilmore Meme about it until we find a new place to rewatch our #1 comfort show. In the meantime, for all the real fans, "in omnia paratus."
