If a cat is purring on your lap, you don't move. Those are the rules. It doesn't matter if your phone is across the room, you're thirsty, or you suddenly remember something important you were supposed to do. A purring cat has claimed its spot, and your responsibilities are temporarily suspended. Sure, your leg might fall asleep and you may be trapped for the foreseeable future, but that's a sacrifice every cat owner understands. The purr takes priority. Everybody knows that.

Purr purr might be the strongest spell in existence. The second a cat starts up their little motor, every human within earshot immediately drops what they're doing to admire them. Conversations stop. People point. Someone inevitably says, "Awww." It doesn't matter how many times you've heard a cat purr before. The effect is always the same. One tiny rumble and suddenly everyone is staring at the cat like they've just performed the greatest magic trick ever.

Even the most emo-looking cats can't resist a good purr. They can sit there looking like they've just written a breakup album, judging the world from a dark corner of the room, but the second the purring starts, the tough act is over. Suddenly that mysterious, brooding feline is just a happy little fluffball enjoying life. No amount of dramatic staring can hide the fact that they're having a great time once the purr motor kicks in.
