I, like many other devoted Whovians, have heard the recent news about the cancellation of Doctor Who and have felt, well, mixed feelings about it. We could all feel the lack of magic in the new series, even with the return of Russell T Davies and the big budget provided by Disney. The plots weren't hitting, the twists weren't twisting, and at some point, I simply stopped watching altogether. I even ranted about why I thought it was a terrible decision to bring back Billie Piper as The Doctor for the Christmas special. It felt like another cheap trick trying to bring back fans… and that already happened the last time David Tennant returned, we get it.
That being said, even though there is nothing in the foreseeable future, I am hopeful that The Doctor will return to our screens one day. I truly think we need a whole decade between a new regeneration, one that will allow a new audience to grow up and take ownership of the franchise, just as we did when New Who graced our televisions back in 2005. The Who universe needs enough time for the current audience to grow out of the Doctor Who phase, so by the time something new comes along, we can sit down with our children and watch the show through their youthful eyes. Then, and only then, can Doctor Who truly get a full chance.
In the meantime, every single doctor we love and enjoy is not going anywhere. We have decades worth of content to come back to and admire, and I am personally grateful for the chance to return to each season and each regeneration with as much excitement as I had when I was 13, wearing a red bowtie, a pair of Converse sneakers, and holding a sonic screwdriver.
