“My former coworker just resigned live on camera during the company's all-hands meeting, and I am still not okay. Let me tell you about someone I used to work with. I'm going to call her V…"

"V started at our company...mid-size HR tech firm, fully remote, the kind of place that puts "people first" in their mission statement and then immediately proves they don't mean it...as a Senior Implementation Analyst. She was good. Like, really good. The kind of person who figures out what's broken before anyone else notices it's broken and then fixes it quietly while everyone else is still arguing about whether it's actually broken."

“About a year into her tenure, the company decided they wanted to build out a Client Strategy function. New department. New direction. Big vision. They tapped V for it because obviously. Who else? She'd basically been doing half the work already without the title.”

To quit in the middle of an all-company meeting video call is the same as standing up in the office and yelling it to the entire room that you quit. We love the drama! One time, I quit a job, and it was very anticlimactic. I said, “I don't think I'm happy here,” and my boss at the time said, “Yeah, I can see that.” And that was that… When I left, I felt a weight lift off my shoulders and was SO happy. Sure, I was worried about how I was going to afford to live my life, but I was also 23 and reckless, so I would've been fine crashing on friends' couches for a while. Actually, I crashed on my brother's couch for four months after that… Anyways, all I'm saying is that I've never had the opportunity to be dramatic about quitting, so I love to hear that someone else is living the dramatic dream. Hope you find a new job soon, queen!

"Here's where it gets fun.
They gave her a new title. They gave her a raise. What they did not give her was the raise that the position actually warranted, because V, being the thorough person that she is, did her research. The raise they gave her landed her five thousand dollars below the published floor for the role she'd just been promoted into."

“I was just bowling with her and her family a few weekends ago. I do know her… I worked with V, I was sitting in the meeting. She and I are still in communication. She wasn't a big Reddit person, so I asked her to tell the story… along with making it anonymous, and that I'd post it for her. She's all in the comment section.”

When a company says they are a “family," that's a red flag. Companies are not your family; your workplace is your workplace. You think your boss is going to mourn you if you leave? No. Would your boss take you in when you're at your lowest? No. If you answered yes to those questions, you are an extreme exception. So, this company putting on the “family” act and then underpaying and undervaluing all of their employees, is not surprising. That's just how it is out there. If you've been through the workforce, then you know. So stay strong out there, everyone! And if you need to make a big splash when you quit, please write it up on Reddit so we can live vicariously through you.
