You don't know what a sense of achievement feels like until you have successfully made something grow.

Every decent plant parent and wannabe garden club member can remember the high of the first time one of their beloved green things sprouted, gained a new leaf or flower, or even gave them something to harvest. In our overly connected and tech-driven world, there is a lot of pleasure to be found in quite literally touching grass and making your outside space (or plant pots on a windowsill) count for something. All we need are a few seeds and some know-how to cultivate life.

We would be lying if we claimed that plant maintenance doesn't have its struggles. Even the most experienced of green thumbs will suffer seedlings that fail to thrive, or a pesky infestation that makes a garden with love behind it start to look like the most neglected of back yards. Despite being a peaceful and wholesome hobby, part of what makes gardening so addictive is that it has an element of risk.

The truth is, even when we account for the difficulties, it is good for the soul to surround ourselves with green, growing things. That is why learning the ins and outs of working with the earth is so rewarding, even if there are uninformed individuals out there who don't see the point of taking care of something that doesn't show you any affection. Plants are a necessary part of the ecosystem, and doing some gardening means playing your part in that.
