Some people are hopeless romantics. Avoidant people are more like cautiously optimistic escape artists. The avoidant experience is deeply contradictory in the funniest possible way. One minute you’re daydreaming about matching pajamas, soft domesticity, and someone who truly understands you. The next minute someone double-texts you and suddenly you’re staring at the ceiling wondering if disappearing into the wilderness forever might be easier. Not because you don’t care. If anything, avoidant people tend to care way too much. That’s kind of the problem. Every interaction somehow carries the emotional weight of a season finale.

Of course, situationships were basically engineered in a laboratory to emotionally devastate avoidant people specifically. Too much distance and they spiral because nobody is emotionally available. Too much closeness and suddenly they need twelve hours alone to “recharge” after somebody asked them what they want for dinner. It’s a delicate ecosystem. Avoidant people can simultaneously crave reassurance while also becoming deeply uncomfortable the second reassurance is actually given to them. Human beings are beautiful and extremely annoying creatures.

There’s something comforting about realizing how universal all of this is. The internet has basically become one giant support group for emotionally conflicted people with commitment issues and excellent senses of humor. Self-awareness might not magically fix avoidant tendencies overnight, but it does make the whole experience significantly funnier. And maybe healing starts there: laughing at the fact that your brain treats basic emotional intimacy like a high-stakes hostage negotiation.
