    Do parents have the right to charge rent to one kid, but not the other?

    Living with your parents as an adult is not the ideal scenario for most people, but it is an arrangement that is becoming more and more common for the younger generations. Whether they have fallen on hard times, are trying to save for a place of their own, or simply do not want to leave, having somewhere to stay in the family home can prove to be a godsend.

    Of course, this living situation usually comes with a price. It isn't always purely financial, but parents will often expect an employed adult child to contribute to the household financially. It makes sense, given that expenses get higher when there are more people under one roof. Although there are always exceptions, coddling kids who should be able to demonstrate their independence is rarely a good idea. Even if parents don't want them to leave, it doesn't help them develop as a person otherwise.

    It is no secret that many moms and dads are prone to favoritism when they have more than one kid, and that can continue into adulthood. All living in the same house can only exacerbate this.
