Should a parent teach their children to stand up for themselves?

The thing about teaching your children that 'no means no' and that they should always stand firm on their beliefs is that they will also learn to stand firm against you. You might hope that your kids will always want to do what you tell them to do, but we all know that they don't work like that. So as soon as you teach them the important values of standing up for themselves, they are going to do it, even if they are standing up for themselves when you're on the opposite side.

It's a small sacrifice to make in order to teach them a valuable lesson, and if we're being honest, it's also a valuable lesson for the parents. 

The sooner a parent starts seeing their children as independent individuals and not extensions of themselves, the better. Kids should have the space to talk to their parents about what they like and don't like to do, and they should be met with support and acceptance, not another attempt to make them do things they don't like.

That is exactly what the mom below was trying to do with her 12-year-old daughter.

The young girl is currently learning how to play the piano, and during a family gathering, she was encouraged to play something for the entire family. However, the 12-year-old is shy and doesn't want to play in front of all these people, so she opted to only play for some family members while the rest were in the kitchen.

The small performance went well, but the members who missed it demanded another round when they realized what had happened. This led the Mom to pressure her daughter to play again, until the only person who had the kid's back was her aunt.
