    Husband lands himself in hot water by proposing they purchase a Mother's Day present that is clearly for himself: 'We have a 50-inch that is older but works well enough for me...'

    Getting and giving someone a present is about a lot more than just the gift itself. How would you react if your partner made this suggestion?

    The art of gift giving really isn't about the gift itself; it's more about the affection, attention that that gift shows, and the effort that you have put into it. All of this says a lot about how you feel about that person, and how much you value them… and how often you think about them. 

    That's not to say that every gift needs to be some glamorous over-the-top perfect gift that is only a want and not a need. Sometimes the best gifts are something that you needed but couldn't justify buying for yourself. Besides, as you get older, it becomes more likely that you might end up with one of these practical gifts, things that you might want but that you also kind of need.

      AITAH for pushing back on husband who tried to pass off a gift for himself as a Mother's Day gift for me?

      My husband loves big TVs. I don't really care. We have a 50 inch that is older but works well enough for me. We're sitting on the couch and my kids wants to blast something from his phone to the TV, and it's not working. So I say, "meh we probably need a new TV", and my husband says, "we could get one this weekend, that could be your Mother's Day gift!"

    • For example, I'd love to own a narrow crown stapler. Do I really need one? Well, not really, but it would sure make some upcoming projects around the house a heck of a lot easier. I can't really justify buying it now, but I would be ecstatic to receive one for my birthday.

      These types of gifts might be "for the family" in that sense, but it's also for that person because I'm the one who really wants it and is going to be using it. And I think these sorts of gifts, socks, and underwear, being another example, are the kind of thing that would horrify you as a kid, but you actually kinda come to enjoy as an adult.

      But giving someone a "gift" that is really something that you want to have around the house, and not necessarily because it's really anything that your partner would want, or make primary use of (no, fellas, do not buy your significant other a vacuum, unless she has explicitly asked for it) just reeks of being self-centered and self-involved and not really interested in the person you're in a relationship with. Giving a gift like this can really tell someone where they stand in your relationship.

      This mother explained how the family had been sitting on the couch watching television, and an offhand remark, that might have even been sarcastic, about the family's current TV prompted her husband to suggest that they go out and buy a new one for Mother's Day. This led to a disagreement that escalated into conflict when her husband tried to defend himself.

      At the end of the day, escalating things so quickly in front of the kids really doesn't make anyone look good here, but at the end of the day, it's not really about the television at all, it's about the laziness and lack of consideration, to downright self-centeredness that it takes for this kind of thing to even be suggested. Really makes you wonder how things are for this couple otherwise.

      So I push back. "Don't disguise a gift for yourself as a Mother's Day gift, dude. That's f ed up". And he just starts fighting back, saying g he already got me something, this was in addition, and that I'm acting like an a hle.

      It escalated to him saying I'm a "hysterical woman", and I put words in his mouth, and that he won't let me walk all over him. He's a great man. But lordie he can never be wrong. A simple, "yeah, you're right. We could get a TV, but it's not a Mother's Day gift" would have been the right move here, but he needed to win the argument and have the last word.

      DelawareMom Years ago, I had a neighbor whose husband bought her a W d whacker for Mother's Day. For Father's Day, he received a string of pearls. Awesome!
