Job hopping is a lot more encouraged now than it was 30 years ago. Back in the day, your resume might get thrown in the trash if they saw that you were in a position for less than two years. Today, many employees are encouraging their colleagues to job-hop to get as much money as possible from their employer. After all, it's much easier to get a significant raise from job hopping than it is to get one from staying at a company long-term. 

Even in 2026, I feel like constant job hopping only works for people who are incredibly good at what they do. If you're just a run-of-the-mill employee, switching jobs every year is still going to look bad on your resume, and hiring managers won't want to hire you because they know you'll give them a year's worth of mediocre work and get on your merry way. 

When you're early in your career, there's a lot more wiggle room to job-hop without being branded as unemployable. It's expected that a recent grad doesn't stay at their first job out of college for 10 years. At the same time, if you graduated from college five years ago and have had five full-time jobs since then, you might have a hard time getting your sixth job. The employee in this story was accused of job-hopping for leaving her first job out of college after 2 years for a much better offer, and you'd have to be a fool to say she's making the wrong decision for herself.
