It's far more controversial to say that children are so indebted to their parents that they need to pay them back for the cost of raising them. Even the most extreme parents don't demand such from people who didn't ask to be born.
Are adult children obliged to pay their parents back for their college tuition? Personally, I think such a request is asinine. The whole point of saving for your kid's college fund is so they won't enter adulthood saddled with debt. The mom in this story doesn't agree with me on that. She thinks that because her son has the money to pay her back for his college education, he should give it to her, and then some.

A 23-year-old man working in biotech took to the internet to tell the strange story of him and his mom. He recently got a life-changing settlement from a personal injury case from when he was in college. His mother, a corporate lawyer, helped him through the legal process, and she paid for his college education.

After winning the settlement, she asked him to pay her a 15% cut and to reimburse her for his college tuition, even though she said she would pay for his college herself.
There are a lot of parts of this situation that seem fishy to me. Her going against her word and asking him to pay her back for college isn't noble. I understand her wanting a cut if she were his lawyer, but he didn't indicate that she was. He only said that she helped him navigate the process, which implies that she didn't actually litigate for him. Not to mention, she's a corporate lawyer for crying out loud! It's not as if she's strapped for cash.
Her son was understandably conflicted about whether or not he should give her the money. 15% is not chump change. He said he wanted to maintain a good relationship with his mother, because he still lives at home with her, and they have had a good relationship.

Surprisingly, a huge chunk of the internet was totally on the mom's side.
“I have no idea how Americans think like this. If mom wants something, she gets it. If my mom wanted 100% of my income, I would give it to her. It wouldn't even be a debate”
“He has zero college debt and is living rent free courtesy of his mother. He’s selfish.”

What do you think? Should the son give his mother 15% of his settlement?
