My husband said he’s sick but gamed all morning. I canceled the expensive staycation

To be fair to her, the gesture came from a good place. He said he wanted to get out to the countryside, she made it happen, and that kind of attentiveness deserves credit. The problem is that feeling down and being ready for a scheduled outing with kayaking on the agenda are two different emotional states, and checking in before booking might have saved everyone a lot of grief.

Then again, his morning does him absolutely no favors. Watching TV, scrolling your phone, and playing video games are all things people do constantly while sick. Nobody is running laps. Nobody is doing yard work. He was sitting on a couch pressing buttons, which is more or less what he would have been doing in the hotel room anyway. The argument that gaming was fine but a car ride was not is the kind of logic that sounds reasonable in your own head and falls apart the second you say it out loud to someone who planned and paid for a trip on your behalf.

She canceled the whole thing rather than adjusting the timeline, which is where she loses the high ground a little. Leaving late and catching the afternoon was always possible. She picked the option that punished them both equally, which is a move, just not a particularly strategic one.

The pattern she describes is what turns this from a bad morning into an actual problem. Repeatedly putting effort into plans that quietly collapse, with no acknowledgment and no attempt to make it up, chips away at a person over time. That is the real issue sitting underneath the gaming debate and the canceled reservation. The staycation was just the day it finally boiled over.
