It's one thing to do this when your financial affairs are in order, but I'm sure a lot of us have that friend or family member, maybe we even are this person, who is disastrous with money and also way too easily convinces themselves that they're going to strike it big with a lottery ticket or scratch off ticket.
When this guy bought a lottery scratch-off ticket off-hand at the behest of his sister's husband, he was surprised when he unexpectedly won a large sum. His sister's husband immediately went through the seven stages of entitlement, demanding he hand him the ticket, likely looking to claim it as his own. When his sister then got involved, the pair continued to try to gaslight him into splitting the winnings, trying to equate the fact of sheer proximity to some entitlement to the winnings.
Even after that, his parents got involved, insisting that he split the winnings with the rest of the family. This turned into a confrontation at this past Thanksgiving, where they were presumably relying on the spirit of the holiday to shake him down for some of the cash.

Tell them you donated it to charity for the tax write-off.

You bought the ticket with your money, you get the winnings.Be sure to tell BIL that he's been doing it wrong all these years, and that's why he doesn't win. You have to buy 1 -$1 ticket, not 20 -$20 tickets.

None of these people have any claim on your winnings
