Something happens to a person the moment they decide to cut their own hair at 2am. A clarity washes over them. A certainty. A deep, unshakeable conviction that this is not only a good idea but possibly the best idea they've ever had. The lighting in the bathroom looks fine. The scissors are right there. How hard could it be?
This is the haircut origin story. And it belongs to more people than anyone is willing to admit.

Here's the thing about haircuts, they carry an enormous amount of emotional weight for something that is, technically, just unalive cells. A bad haircut can feel like a personality crisis. A good one can feel like a complete reinvention. And a self-administered one at midnight, motivated by a feeling rather than a plan, can feel like both of those things simultaneously, sometimes within the same ten minutes.
There's also the barbershop experience, which is its own entire universe of relatable suffering. The sitting perfectly still while something is clearly going wrong. The polite smile in the mirror when the stylist spins you around for the reveal. The "yeah, I love it" that comes out of your mouth while your brain is already calculating how long it takes to grow back. Nobody speaks up. Nobody has ever spoken up. It's a social contract we all silently agreed to and none of us remember signing.

And then there are the bangs. The bangs deserve their own paragraph because the bangs are always a decision made under very specific emotional conditions. Something happened. The bangs seemed like the answer. They were not the answer. But for approximately forty minutes before the first look in natural lighting, they were everything.

What makes all of this so deeply lovable is that it keeps happening. The 2am scissors come back out. The barber gets another chance. The bangs get reconsidered one more time. Because optimism is a powerful thing, and haircut optimism, the belief that this time, with this cut, everything is going to be different, might be the most human kind of all.
New hair, new chapter. Even if the chapter starts with a hat.
