I do know someone who flies first class fairly often though: thanks to traveling for business all the time, she's saved up a bajillion frequent flyer miles, and will sometimes splurge on the upgrade for longhaul flights.
She's told me that first class is great. There's extra leg room, really nice pillows and blankets, better food and drink options, and it's quiet and cozy.
But at the same time… you're still on a plane with everyone else for the next however many hours.
You're still breathing that recycled air, you still have to sit down and strap in when the seatbelt sign pops on.
You still smell the scent of the dinner trays from business and economy class (even though first-class food is better, as you'd expect).
You'll hear it loud and clear if a baby is crying in the back of the plane.
And sometimes curious people still pop their heads into the first class section, to look at the luxury section of the plane that they can't afford.
It's nice if you can get it, but it's probably not worth paying a zillion dollars as an average person for a fleeting sense of luxury.

The Mom trying to sweet-talk her way into a first class seat does inspire the extreme cringe reaction in us all! Like, you can see where she's coming from. There are some places where speaking up can get you nicer treatment.
If you go to a hotel and ask during check in for a room with a view, they might have one. If you ask for a nice seat at a restaurant and slip the host a $20, they may be able to find you somewhere nice to sit.
But asking for the first-class treatment for no reason at all just will not work the same. Imagine thinking you can get a seat worth $15,000 just because you said “pretty please” to the flight attendant!
Even if the flight attendant wanted to be nice and help out the Mom and her teen, she'd make every other passenger furious that they couldn't also have that same treatment.

Love how everything worked out here! Mom learned a lesson, but also still had a positive experience during the flight. And I'm sure the flight attendant was relieved that Mom didn't fully throw a fit, as many passengers surely do. We love a win-win!
