But even having one bad roommate can make your life a living nightmare. Imagine what kind of financial pickle you'd be in if your roommate stopped paying rent and utilities for six months? You'd either have to jeopardize your living situation by not paying the rent and bills in full on your own dime, or destabilize your personal finances by draining your emergency fund and even going into debt for a roommate, of all people.

The dude in this story discovered that his roommate is not trustworthy. They've been living together for 4 months, and when he moved in, his roommate told him the rent was $ 1,600. They split the rent so the new guy was paying $1000, and the roommate was paying $600. It would make more sense for them to split it halfway, $800, but that would mean that the roommate was being honest with the new guy.

That means the roommate had been taking $ 1,000 every month and not even sending the full amount to the landlord. He had been subsidizing his roommates' rent to support his lazy lifestyle, risking both their living situations.
