    Woman refuses to watch her step-sister's 5 and 6-year-old children after being left with the children overnight the last time she watched them: '[She] didn't come back until Monday, 3 hours after I should have gone to work'

    What would you do if you were asked to watch someone's children again after they proved to be untrustworthy the previous time?

    Strained family dynamics and efforts to reconnect quickly turned into manipulation and boundary-testing when this woman's step-sister left her children with her overnight without warning, leaving her feeling cautious when pressured to watch the children again.

    Sometimes in life, you have to ask yourself: Does this person really want a relationship with me, or am I just convenient to them when they need something from me and when it suits them most? 

    While everyone wants to have good relationships with their family, being a pushover and a people pleaser isn't going to get you anywhere. Let's put it this way: if you're worried about setting boundaries with someone because you're worried they won't want to be associated with you if you do, do you really want to have that relationship with that person?

      WIBTAH if I refuse to babysit my step-sister's two children after what happened last time?

      I recently moved out of my parents home, quite far away from them, but pretty close to my step sister's. Now, we do NOT have a good relationship per se, more like acquaintances, but she seems to think we are very close. She's a very toxic person but seems like she wants to be close to me, which is why i feel terrible about this.

    • Boundaries are important with family, as with any relationship, and without them, you're not really doing your efforts of establishing a relationship to any benefit. All you're doing is showing someone that they can walk all over you, which even the most well-intended people will begin doing, even at a very small level, if given the chance. With family, it's easier to set boundaries than with friends, as the foundation of the bond is tighter because, well, you're family. But if you fail to do so, the result will be the same, but with life-lasting consequences of having taught your family that they can just walk all over you without any push back.

      When this woman moved closer to her step-sister, she hoped that the closer physical distance might bring them closer together. The step-sister, who had a history of being somewhat “toxic,” seemed to wish for the same. Eager to make things work between them, when she was asked to watch her step-sister's children for a “few hours” on a Sunday, she was happy to help out. However, she quickly got a taste of her step-sister's reputation when her step-sister failed to return to collect her children for the entire rest of the day and into the following Monday, being trapped at home with the children made the woman late for work!

      Last time she asked me to babysit her two kids (5 & 6) on a Sunday for a few hours I was totally fine. I assumed she just wanted some alone time with her bf or whatever, (would come back late that night) but turns out they left the city, didn't check their phones AT ALL, and didn't come back until Monday 3 hours after I should have gone to work. Thankfully my boss was understanding cuz ? Their phones were completely off and I was starting to get worried, since they don't and didn't tell me much.

      Now she asks me to babysit again, and initially I refused but being the person she is, she started telling my step-dad and mom, leading to them chiding me non-stop because "what if her work really needed her" then get a babysitter? She works from home but occasionally needs to go out, and her bf works 9-5. Not only that, my home isn't even suitable for children but because its FREE, she guilts me to just let her leave her children here for long periods of times, this has happened multiple times
