    Neighbor selfishly places traffic cones to reserve parking spots on a busy street, new homeowners call him out: 'I just took the cones and put them in my garage'

    I used to think traffic cones meant a space was reserved for a good reason. Turns out, sometimes they just mean someone feels entitled to it. 

    Traffic cones are usually respected by drivers without question. And why wouldn't they be respected? They're meant to serve a purpose, and they typically signal something official, like construction zones or some kind of legitimate need. So it's only fair that they're given some respect.

    But what if I told you some people place them there, not out of necessity or safety, but for their own convenience?

    • A few months ago, my wife and I bought a house and moved in (our house is not pictured in the above masterpiece). There were two traffic cones placed outside the front door of house number 3.

    • These cones were in place for a couple of months. I had originally assumed that they were put there by the owners of house 3, as I know one of them is dis ed so I thought they were just making sure they had somewhere to park.

    • I started questioning if this was actually the reason though as I had never actually seen any car parked there. One day I bumped in to one owner of house 3 and casually asked them about the cones.

    • Apparently they were not put there by house 3, they have a driveway at the back of their house so park there.

    • Apparently, the cones belong to house 1, who put the cones there to stop people parking opposite their driveway, as they don't want to have to do a multi point turn to get in and out.

    • Okay, so these people are placing cones just because they're too lazy to make a few extra maneuvers to park. Clever strategy, sure, but a really inconsiderate one when you think about the rest of the neighbors. Sooner or later, someone was bound to notice.

    • The road is quite narrow but you are allowed to park on that side of the road and it doesn't cause problems for house 2, who actually have a much larger car than house 1, and get in and out without any fuss.

    • It's a shared space, the spot is perfectly available, and as far as anyone can tell, they have no right to place those cones there. Yet the entire neighborhood continues to respect those cones without ever questioning whether they're there for a valid reason. I don't blame them, as I said, that's what most people do. 

    • This really annoyed me as house 1 are essentially taking up a parking space for no reason; they are happy to inconvenience other people just so they don't have to learn how to drive properly. The street is really busy for parking so it's not as if there are plenty of other places for people to park.

    • I didn't actually remove the first batch of cones, we had a storm that had very strong wind and I assume they got blown away as the next morning they were nowhere to be seen. For a few days I was very happy as it seemed the situation resolved itself but then I came home after work and saw that they had replaced the cones. I got annoyed so just took the cones and put them in my garage.

    • It's funny that this neighbor got so annoyed that he took the cones himself and stored them in his garage, but his frustration is actually quite understandable. I would have thought, “wow, they've been taking us for fools all this time”. They had been obediently following an imaginary rule.  

    • Every week or so they replace the cones, and every time I remove them and drop them off at the council building (the cones belong to the council so I think house 1 are just picking up random cones they find?).

    •  Sometimes it takes one observant neighbor to challenge nonsense that everyone else quietly accepts. Apparently, he's the local hero this street didn't know it needed.

    • My wife thinks I'm overreacting and that I'm going to a lot of effort for something that doesn't impact me (we have our own dedicated parking area so I haven't personally been impacted by the cones taking up a space). But it's about the principle for me, they are making life difficult for other people because of their laziness. Also, it isn't actually that inconvenient for me, the council building is on my way to work so I just drop them off on the way.

    • Drive the way everyone else does! We can't start placing cones in random spots just because it's easier to back out of your driveway.

    • in this situation? I Anyway, do you think I'm the j know it may seem overboard but I just hate this kind of entitlement. I didn't mind when I thought the cones were there for an actual need, but these two being crp drivers isn't a need!

    • Nathan-Stubblefield You will inevitably be spotted by house 1 or by a Ring cam they can put up. Then there will be a frank discussion. I had a j similar to yours. neighbor
