    Coworker asks woman to help her move, when she arrives, nothing is packed, and learns the new place is 40 minutes drive: 'She said it'd be "just a few boxes" and maybe 2-3 hours, it took 7 and a half'

    What was supposed to be a quick favor spirals into a full-day ordeal as the woman discovers her coworker, whom she agreed to help, hasn't packed and expects more last-minute requests and favors.

    I think we have probably all been in this situation: A friend, family member, or occasionally an acquaintance asks you to help them move, and you agree, and when you turn up to help them move some furniture and some boxes around, you are startled to discover that they haven't even started packing yet. 

    And then that sliding scale of expectation continues to move. It turns out they don't have a vehicle to move with and they haven't organized a moving truck, could they use yours? You were comfortable with the idea of maybe throwing a few boxes in the back seat and driving to their new place to drop them off, but you're not really ready to be dragging and wedging things in and out of your new car.

      So last weekend I agreed to help [name] move to her new place across town. I've helped friends move before, no big deal. She said it'd be "just a few boxes" and maybe 2-3 hours. Cool. I show up at 10am with my car. First thing she says is "oh did you bring anyone else?" No, you said a few boxes. She then opens the door and I see a fully packed 2-bedroom apartment. Not a single thing is in a box yet. There's furniture, a treadmill that looks like it hasn't moved since 2015, and like 7 floor lamps

    • Let's be honest, at least some of us have probably been this person at some point in our lives, and maybe we were desperate or just disasterously disorganized, whatever the reason, we've hopefully come to terms with how frustrating this was for our friends and family who were just trying to help out.
      And, depending on what your relationship is with the person, there's a point here somewhere where you should probably just say no thanks and walk away

      It's always a red flag when someone you have a loose connection with, it might just be that they're new to the area and don't know many people locally, but if that's not the case, you have to ask yourself why you were the one asked in the first place. Maybe it just so happens that you are one of the few people they know who own a pickup truck…if that's the case, you'll find yourself being asked to help people move stuff all the time.

      This woman found herself slowly pulled into a disaster of a moving situation, what she had been told would be a 2-3 hour afair quickly turned into a full-day ordeal as one favor led to an expectation for another.

      Okay fine, I start helping anyway. Around noon she asks if I can also drive to IKEA after to pick up a new bookshelf she ordered because "it won't fit in her car." I have a Honda Civic. But sure, I say, let's see. Then around 1pm, when we're barely halfway done, she tells me her new place is actually not across town. It's

      40 minutes away. And she says it kind of apologetically but also just keeps talking like it's normal. We finish around 5:30pm. Seven and a half hours. My back is destroyed. She hands me a candle. One of those small Bath & Body Works candles, the travel size ones. I said thank you and drove home. The IKEA bookshelf is still at IKEA.

      The_Ri_Ri If you have to ask a co-worker to help you move, you probably have no friends or family left to ask for a favor. That was a red flag from the initial ask.
