Sometimes, you'll even be allowed to invite your significant other! Bringing a new person you're dating into your family life is kind of a big deal.
As this woman learned, though, you have to be careful how you talk about the food.
Some people really dislike it if you critique their meal preparation, even if you're saying something as simple as "This soup is way too salty to eat," or "My hamburger is burnt to a crisp." It doesn't make logical sense, because if your food doesn't taste good and you don't plan on finishing your meal, the chef might want to know why that is. Or you can simply say nothing and place a napkin over your food to hide that you're not eating it. Their feelings may be hurt either way, because you'll be tossing out a plate of food they presented to you.
But if you were cooking for guests and they didn't care for the food, would you want to know why? Or would you rather they force down a meal that they can barely stomach, just to appease you?

So what do we think? Did this woman actually do anything wrong?
Unless she's leaving out some context, it seems like she didn't do anything out of pocket. I have no idea why the mom would put sugar in regular mashed potatoes. Sweet potatoes with brown sugar can be an excellent dessert. Regular taters just don't have that same appeal, though, and I truly can't think of any cuisine that takes that approach. Perhaps there's a recipe somewhere that does that combo justice, but clearly it's an uncommon food pairing.
Maybe she was super mean to the Mom? But I think it's more likely that Mom is very sensitive to criticism. Maybe the whole family has been choking down that meal for decades, saying nothing in order to make Mom feel okay, only for the GF to disrupt the status quo.
