Manager fires supermarket employee for refusing to clean other department, faces $40,000 in losses: 'It's not what I was hired for'

Should employees be forced to take on work that is outside their job description?

There are plenty of people in the workforce who happily accept (or feel like they have no choice but to deal with) extra responsibilities that get heaped on them by their boss. Many would argue that it is just part of what comes with having a job, and others do these things because they fear facing negative consequences otherwise.

However, nobody is under any obligation to do things at work that do not fall under the definition of what their role is supposed to be. The only issue is that management may not take kindly to this opposition. The kind of person who is likely to make this refusal is also the kind of person who is more likely to accept that there may be another job hunt in their future, though.

Being brave and standing up for yourself in this situation can also come with other benefits that make up for the temporary loss of salary. One of the most satisfying is witnessing a manager or company struggle because of the rash decisions they made about your employment. Done right, it is one of the sweetest forms of revenge.

A part-time grocery store cashier quickly ran into problems in their job after somebody in the butchery section of the store unexpectedly quit.
