Work ethic is all about how you frame things, and productivity is a fluctuating state of mind. Should workers be expected to have the same emotional, physical, and mental capacity every single day? Of course not! But like the micromanagers of the world say, “A watched worker is a productive worker.” Well, in my humble opinion, those types of leaders aren't looking very closely… Nor should they.
Nobody likes to be scrutinized.
When given the autonomy to follow their productivity hours, employees are emboldened to go above and beyond for their company. Not that this should be a “hack” that's exploitable and raved about at every lame, LinkedIn-coded work conference. But truly, when managers work alongside their workforce, things go much more smoothly. Perhaps it's my own personal opinion shining through, as an extremely independent worker, but all of my best work is done when nobody is watching.
Consequently, workers who are independent are much like cats. Whenever the masters are around, they're napping, crying for an early lunch, and knocking their coffee mugs off the counter to waste time on a break. Yet, when the vigilant watchers are away, the cats will play. And in this analogy, the cats will work harder than ever, knowing that nobody is scrutinizing.

Perhaps it's an unpopular opinion, and of course, there are other types of workers out there, but when it comes to a workweek where C-level bosses expect a full 40 hours of productivity, maybe it's time to rethink what we know about careers and consider the actual work being done. Certainly, not all 40 hours are productive, especially in an office environment full of distractions, but alas, therein lies the debate of the workplace return.
Not everyone is self-motivated, but in a world where self-reliance and self-confidence are rewarded, why not reward those who get the job done without being asked twice? Then again, maybe the workforce is retaliating against the ever-present, somehow always booked 4 PM meeting time slot on their Friday calendars…
