  • I decided to quit effective immediately because my manager insulted me. Did I make the right move?

I'm 25 working in accounting with a psychopathic manager, today I was auditing his own faulty work upon his request, I used my own way, it doesn't matter the way rather than the result and it always worked very effectively.
  • My way was smart and I was happy with myself but he wanted me to use another way, he asked me to explain my own way, he didn't understand it, so he shouted "You're stupid" you should do this and not that and he was moving angrily kicking files around me that I used. I lost all the motivation and focus and
  • immediately felt disgusted. it's been two years of disrespect. so I went home and decided not to go back ever, and messaged the owner explaining what happened. I don't have another job, yes, but I don't have any obligations and can do ok for about 3 months.

  • Update: Thank you guys whether you thought it was the right decision or not, I feel comfortable with my decision. However I need to clarify a few things because it was repeated a lot in your comments:

  • The story: The manager messed up the bank ledger account, he reached an ending balance that was very different from the bank statement, he came up to me and asked me to revise HIS work and address the mistakes he made. He typically uses pen and paper, yes, no software, not even excel. But I use excel, so I started by copying his handwritten work to
  • excel to start revising from there and comparing with the General ledger and bank statement. I started by analyzing the bank statement itself and matching every transaction with the general ledger to ensure there's no issue here and I prepared the right bank ledger myself that was supported by the bank statement and the general ledger. Then I started retracing his steps in recording his entries and

  • comparing his with mine so I can flag where errors happened. That took me a while because the work was tedious. He never asked me to use a certain way, he just came up to me frowning and asked why is it taking you so long? Explain to me how you're doing it, I explained my way that always worked (it's not the first
  • time), I said I'm copying your work to excel and then reconciling against the bank statement and GL. He straight out said "You're stupid, what you're doing is pure stupidity, and you're wasting time, then he brisk walked towards me, kicked the files I had around and grabbed the bank statement from my hand and said revise this
  • against my handwritten work, I said "I'm doing that", he said "no you're looking into the computer" , I explained to him that his handwritten work is now on my computer because I copied it to excel. He didn't understand this and just left angrily.

  • I lost all my focus and felt angry, "did he actually insult me?", I was helping him and I always corrected his work and this is how I am treated. So I left my chair and quit. That's it. Some notes: 1-This is not the first time I am treated like sh and unprofessionally, I've been dealing with this for two years.
  • 2-It's a small company, we don't have HR, I reported him three times before for similar scenarios to the owner himself. 3-No former employee continued for more than 6 months with him because of how he treated them. 4-It's not a formal accounting process, I was only addressing his mistakes for him.

  • Commenters gave their two cents on the story.

Hungry-Quote-13... Did I make the right move? Depends, what happens after you "can do ok for about 3 months"?
  • Certain_Try_8383 You did what you did. Now haul a to take the first job you can find and then you can look for the one you want. I hear it's brutal out there, good luck to you.
  • Topic_Melodic Many of us have been there. I think age and career choice matters a lot on our reactions. If you can afford to leave a toxic work place then do you.

  • Ruthless_Bunny You'll know in three months.
  • courtneyg1107 I don't think you did anything wrong. You stood up for yourself, so that's all that matters. You will eventually find another job, or you could do a contract job until you find something full time. If you have money saved for the next couple
  • months and a support system, you'll be okay. I am deciding to leave my job with nothing lined up. Yes, it's scary, but many people have quit jobs without a job lined up. Eventually everything works out.

  • YouNeedCheeses What's done is done now, there's nothing you or he can do to change it. His behaviour is unacceptable but you probably should have broached it with HR before deciding to just leave, you could have had
  • more recourse that way. But you were also asked to do your work a particular way which you chose not to do. A lot of the time even if you don't agree with a policy, it's there for good reason. I think you should keep that in mind when you get your next job.

  • BadEgg1951 After two years of that kind of treatment I kinda get why you snapped. I had a manager raise their voice at me once and it stuck with me way longer than it should've. Not having something lined up is scary but staying somewhere like that messes with you too.
  • nancylyn You are going to find out soon enough if you made the right move. If you can find another job with no reference then, yes, it was the right move.
  • GoodishCoder It's always easier to find a new job when you're currently employed but if you have no obligations, it probably won't matter.
