  • I sent my wife for an oil change, and it cost me $3400

Whenever my wife and I drive, we take my car. It's an EV, it's newer, it's more comfortable, etc.

  • I moved her car recently and saw it was 6,000mi overdue for an oil change. So I asked her to get one and suggested an instant place up the road.

  • Instead, she took it to the dealership. When she got to the service desk they upsold her on an $1,800 Gucci service that included. $500 for spark plugs, $300 for fuel additive, etc.
  • I thought they did these things on their own volition, but then I spoke with the service manager and he sent me the signed estimate for these services... so my wife signed off on it.

  • They also noticed her state inspection was overdue, so they went through the rest of the car and required windshield wipers be replaced, parking lights be replaced, and $1,400 for new lower control arm bushings (legitimately needed replacing).
  • So what I was expecting to cost $120 ended up costing $3,400. Her car: ICE (the one worked on) My car: EV

  • hockeyandhalloween Funny enough I got my oil changed at a dealership today (the 1st 4 are included with purchase). They told me (a woman) I needed a new air and cabin filter. $125 was what it would have cost. I changed them yesterday

  • pandacat3 Most likely a fuel injection cleaning service. It's different from dumping some Techron in the tank. I hope they included the intake decarbonization service at that price too.
  • johngettler There's a big note now on file "Will fall for anything. Upsell to $3K every visit."
  • Cybertechy Sadly, it is all too true that when a Service Adviser sees an unaccompanied woman come into a shop... They will many times offer services that would NEVER be offered to a well educated male. I have a few single lady friends that have been similarly dupped.

  • MiloTheMagnificent Honestly if she's 6000 miles overdue on oil and her inspection all that other sh probably needed to be dealt with too. It doesn't sound like cat maintenance is much of a priority.
  • Miserable_Trifle8667 I mean, what the f . I'm not the richest man in the world (obviously) and my wife and I make a very good income. We would absolutely call one another before getting that expensive as sh done. Our rule is anything over 1k we need to discuss with one another. Y'all might need this rule lol
