Turning 16 and getting your driver’s license feels like unlocking a whole new version of life. Suddenly, you’re not waiting on rides or coordinating plans around other people, you are the plan. Late-night drives, blasting music, picking your own route just because you can… it all hits immediately.
For a moment, you feel unstoppable. And then someone says, “just park there.” Parallel parking, specifically. That’s where the confidence starts to quietly… wobble.

Because in theory, it’s simple. You’ve done it before, you know the steps, you’ve literally practiced this. But somehow, the second there’s an actual car behind you waiting, your brain just exits the chat. You turn the wheel. Too much. Undo it. Now you’re at a weird angle. Reverse again. Why does it suddenly feel like geometry?

And of course, there’s always a small, invisible audience that immediately becomes very real the second you mess up.
A car behind you that wasn’t there two seconds ago. Someone walking by at the exact worst moment. Maybe even someone inside a parked car, just… witnessing everything. That’s when the pressure kicks in and every move feels ten times more dramatic than it actually is.
So you do what everyone does. You try once. Maybe twice. Then you either absolutely nail it (rare, but life-changing), or you hit them with the classic move: casually driving away like you never intended to park there in the first place. No one saw anything.

But parallel parking is just one part of the experience. Being a “not amazing but trying” driver comes with its own set of moments. Braking a little too hard because you thought the light might change. Taking turns slightly wider than necessary like you’re driving something much bigger than you are. Turning the music down completely when you need to focus, as if that somehow helps your spatial awareness.
It’s all part of it.

At the end of the day, you’re still out there, doing your thing. Even if the parking takes a couple tries.
