    The new girl is not as great as her boss says she is.

    It's easy for companies to get caught up in the potential of their new hires. It's only natural, since new hires are much more likely to act as if they will do anything and everything for a company to prove that they're worth keeping around. New hires are much more vulnerable in the event of company layoffs, and they understandably want to avoid losing their job before they even get a chance to get a grasp on it. 

    The first year of your job can be the most important one for forming relationships with your colleagues. If a new hire doesn't make any effort in the social aspects of their job, it might hurt them when their work isn't up to snuff. If you do a middle-of-the-road job and don't make the effort to speak with your coworkers, you're more likely to be on the cutting room floor than your middle-of-the-road coworker who is friendly with everyone and professes love for the company at every opportunity. 

    Still, it's hard to be a reliable employee who has been at the company for years when your bosses seem to invest their time and energy only in the new hire. It might be because they like you in your current position and want to keep you there rather than encourage you to climb the ranks. They might not be willing to invest time with you if you haven't taken the initiative to ask them. Whatever the case, it stinks when an employee's vibe is more important than the work itself.
