This person's advice might sound harsh, but I think it's just going to become more important, and ring truer, the longer that time goes on.
The bigwigs making decisions at these companies seem happy to make sweeping cuts to their workforce without considering the long-term consequences. And they should consider them!
But I think many people who make it to that top level of management are only thinking about themselves, and lining their own pockets. They're thinking about their family's trip to somewhere tropical, and they're not thinking about how their company will be doing in 10 years. It's all super selfish, and I hope that this style of management doesn't last much longer. It's just not good for anyone except the selfish CEO who took someone else's salary at the expense of every other worker.
So yeah, this person is right: don't reward that behavior. Make these senior level workers sit face to face with their own decisions. Oh no, there aren't enough workers to do the job because you fired them all? What a silly decision. What are you gonna do now, huh?
