    Car dealership manager backtracks and says it's a prank after employee quits in response to being told he was fired for refusing to buy a car from the manager: 'I already had a better job that was able to start me immediately'

    When his manager made him think that he was being fired for not purchasing a car at the dealership where he worked, this employee decided that he wasn't going to put up with that type of behavior and made a difficult but important decision. 

    While it's great to have a strong rapport with your workers, there is a subtle but critical boundary that it is crucial not to cross. 

    Many workplaces encourage a friendly, relaxed, positive culture where everyone can be themselves and build camaraderie that increases productivity and engagement, and encourages new ideas to help achieve the business's goals. It's only natural that you will develop personal relationships with the people that you're spending so much time with. 

    Even if you try your best to sever your personal life from your professional life, avoiding sharing or exchanging any personal information or pleasantries with your coworkers, at some point, the sheer facts of proximity and time will cause a relationship of some sort to develop, even a strained one.

    While this is important, there's an incredibly fine line there somewhere in the sand, and we need to know where being personable ends and where what is professionally appropriate begins.

      Manager told me I was fired as a joke so I quit.

      I worked for a car dealership as a lot porter. I had gotten into an accident that totaled my car right as I was purchasing a house. Which led to a predicament because you don't want to buy a new car while buying a house. Shortly after buying the house I found a different job in a field I love

    • We all know the topics that you're told to avoid at all costs when it comes to the workplace. It's ingrained in us as a part of corporate and general working culture. While there might be some brash cowboys out there who aren't afraid to dive into any topic, they can be sure that they're not their HR department's biggest fan. And if you pester your colleague about one of those topics one too many times, you can be sure that you're going to have a message from HR wanting to have a "quick catch-up" with you the following morning.

      Amongst the list of topics that "aren't work appropriate," we should probably make an addition for “pranks” and other jokes played at the expense of others. Fun that is being had at another's expense leaves way too many ways for things to go sideways and create major HR issues.

      When this sales manager tried to tell an employee that he was going to be fired for buying a car at another dealership, he called the manager's bluff and quit on the spot, as luckily he already had another job lined up. We've all probably imagined a moment like this, quitting in spectacular fashion, but seldom, if ever, would many of us just have another job that we could fall back on like this.

      buy a car from him. I didn't disclose the fact to anyone that i bought from a different dealer. I informed him I already bought one, so he looks at me in the most serious face and asks if I wanted to pack my things, basically because i wasnt "loyal" to this dealership. Knowing I already had a better job that was able to start me immediately, I said sure and turned and walked away to pack my things.

      He then realized I wasn't going to put up a fight, so he immediately started laughing and told me he was joking. And how they would never fire anyone for giung somewhere else. But I already knew a few people that had gotten fired for that exact reason.

      I told him I don't appreciate being fired as a joke, because first I do have a 1 ½ year old and if I didn't have a job lined up he could have seriously hurt me financially. But I ended up leaving feeling relieved because thjs was not a good job.

      The funny thing is, he called me about 30-45 minutes after I left because I had left keys to multiple brand new trucks in my desk that had to have the plastic removed and get parked. Turns out since he "fired" me they made him take care of the stuff. I am now fully enjoying my new job with the best bosses I've ever had! | know I probably took it to far but I dont regret it.

      Edit: there was a few good sales managers that really cared and i don't want to throw them under the bus. But the job got too tiring because of the bad ones. I hope this made sense as I am writing this when im so freakin exhausted and sick.

      Dwardo225 Original Poster's Reply I made like 12.50 an hour plus overtime. But my wife was working too so thats how we afforded it. It wasn't a expensive house but I was suprised I got the loan tbh

      jazzieberry Yeah I bought my house alone while I was making less than 40k about 9 years ago. I got a "rural development" loan which helped a lot because I didn't have to give a down payment. Then my mortgage ended up being like maybe $50 more than my rent on a one. bedroom apartment. People really don't fully grasp the difference in cost of living in different places.
