What do you do in a situation like that? It's so awkward, and nobody is moving any time soon, so now you have to live with this awkwardness right next door. Every time you leave your house, you'll be trying to avoid running into that neighbor. That sounds exhausting. Why do some people have to be bad neighbors? There were several different routes this guy could have taken to avoid this awkwardness. Gaslighting is definitely not one of them. If he broke the tool or lost it, he could have just said so and then offered to replace it. If he can't afford that, suggest a payment plan or offer them some sort of work, maybe even a trade? If you liked it so much, ask if they would sell it to you or ask where they got it so you can get yourself on. Gaslighting them is never the answer…
