  • KniteMonkey Respectfully, don't ever do this. You assisted in time theft which companies take seriously. It's your coworkers job to reach out to your manager and inform them they will be late.
  • DrinkPresent7311 Original Poster's Reply I totally agree now I just thought I was being helpful and didn't want to cause problems between me and this coworker

  • KniteMonkey I totally understand where you are coming from. I'm more disappointed in your coworker for putting you in this situation. They should know better and they took advantage of your kind nature.
  • DrinkPresent7311 Original Poster's Reply Exactly I was pretty shocked when she got mad at me for outing her, did she want me to get caught lying on top of that?

  • Legote How did your manager approach you when he asked that question? Was he in detective mode or just causally asking? But again, either go 100% or don't.

  • DrinkPresent7311 Original Poster's Reply My manger is very nice but she seemed a bit more serious than usual and I know I would've felt super guilty if I was lying to her when she was genuinely asking me that question
  • Legote Next time just pretend like you don't know, and have her defend herself. You either agree to cover your coworker 100% or don't at all. She can just make something up about a bathroom emergency or something. Time difference was 30 minutes.... Not like she was trying to slack off. You scratch her back, and she scratch your back. Not saying it's ethical to lie, but it's really wasn't that serious of an issue.
  • DrinkPresent7311 Original Poster's Reply I understand, but if I would have lied to my manager there they would've found out the truth later and I could've been fired for clocking her in plus the lying

  • tender_glimmers NTA. She asked you to risk your job for her, then got mad when you told the truth. Next time, let her be late.
  • stargazer777 I mean, come on. That was a really dumb thing to do and you should have known better. They could very well have fired you for it and that would have been justified. If someone is having a "family emergency" that's exactly what personal time is for.

  • IJustWorkHere000c You're honestly lucky it wasn't worse for you and for her. That's time theft and punching in for people is a fireable offense most places.
  • Pyxnotix I feel like a lot of companies have cameras now. Therefore, doubling down could potentially demonstrate their lack of integrity to their superiors.
