    16-year-old backs out of group trip after friends plan age-restricted activities she's not able to attend: ‘I'm not just sitting at the Airbnb every single night’

    The entire point of a "group trip" is to be in a group, not left out of most activities.

    • If your plans have ever made it out of the group chat, you know just how exhausting it is to make a well-thought-out itinerary for you and your friends. It's difficult to appease everyone, especially when certain activities are age-restricted, only for women or men, or for folks who are abled-bodied versus those who have limited movement. Despite these challenges, it's crucial to make time for everyone to do something, and never leave anyone out for too long. If you're leaving them out of the action for over half the trip, why are they there in the first place?

      In this next story, a 16-year-old decides to speak up and tell her friends that she's dropping out of the group trip if they only partake in 18+ activities, since she is two years younger than most. She's uncomfortable lying about her age as well, so there's no way for her to comfortably attend the trip without either lying or sitting in their Airbnb while her friends party it up without her. I am a year younger than all of them because I started high school a year early, and originally, on our trip, we had planned some sightseeing stuff, Broadway plays, visiting the flea markets, art museums, basically like all the kind of toursity new york things.

    • I honestly would love to go because I do like parties and dancing and stuff, but I've also been accepted to a prestigious university, and I don't want to have anything on my record for the risk of getting it rescinded.

    • A senior trip is supposed to be a collective trip. The funniest part about this scenario is that, though the 16-year-old seems upset, she has no issue opting out of the vacation. She understands the age gap and what that might mean for her place on the trip. Her friends simply don't want to view themselves as villainous or selfish in any way, which, though understandable, goes against their actions.
