Am I the j*rk for refusing to give back my "borrowed" car that I've had for 3 years?

My uncle gave me his old Honda Civic 3 years ago when I graduated high school.

He said "here you go, it's yours now" and signed the title over to me. I've been paying insurance, registration, maintenance, everything.

Last month he totaled his new car and now wants MY car back. Says he only "loaned" it to me and needs it now since his is gone.

I said you literally gave it to me! The title is in my name! He says "family loans don't need paperwork" and I should understand he needs it more.

I've put $2000 into this car over 3 years, new tires, brakes, timing belt, the works.

He says that's "maintenance | would've done anyway" so it doesn't count. My parents are saying I should give it back to keep peace in the family but this is my car.

I need it for work.. He's threatening to report it stolen even though the title is legally mine.

How is that a loan?? TL;DR: Uncle gave me car 3 years ago with signed title, now wants it back claiming it was a loan, I've paid all costs and refuse to return it, family says I'm being difficult.

Abject_Jump9617 Call his bluff, tell him to go ahead and report it stolen. Then show the cop your paperwork.

Beneficial_Buddy_510 Original Poster's Reply If he does report it as stolen, I will absolutely show the paperwork. I'm not trying yo escalate things, but Im also not giving up my car because he regrets his situation..

Beneficial_Buddy_510 Original Poster's Reply That's how I see it too.. the title is in my name, I've handled all the expenses for 3 years. Legally and practically it should be mine right?

saucyuproar NTJ. The title was signed over to you and has been in your name for 3 years. That's not a loan, that's a completed transfer of ownership. You've paid insurance, registration, and put money into maintenance the entire time. Legally and practically, it's your car. I understand he's in a tough spot after totaling his car, but that doesn't undo a gift from years ago. It's not selfish to keep something that was formally given to you and that you rely on for work.

CaptainSnappertain You can have the car or a good relationship with your uncle. I know which I'd choose (hint: it's not the uncle).

Mr_Abe_Fromen I'd love to see how he explains to the cops that it's his even though the plates are registered to op, which they'll see the second they enter them in the system.

get_to_ele AND that he waited three years to report it stolen, and only after wrecking his own car. He's the one to face charges for filing a false report.

Careless-Image-885 NTJ. Put the car title where NO ONE, including your mother, cannot take it from you. Tell him to call the police then mute him. Keep all texts/emails.
