Many of us have at least one family member, if not more, who doesn't understand or respect the concept of “remote work.”
If you've ever worked remote, it's probably happened to you: mid work-call, Dad pokes his head in the room to remind you to do the dishes. Or maybe you're on a time crunch, but your Mom insists on standing in the doorway and yapping for 25 minutes about how she saw her friend at the grocery store. They see that your laptop is out, but they don't fully grasp that you're working a job, the same as if you were seated in an office. You can't just drop everything to hang out with your family members! And in this person's case, when there are children around, that just makes focusing on a work project even more of a challenge…

This is exactly the right attitude! If you have time to prepare for your little guests, you can buy them their favorite snacks, figure out how to occupy their time with toys or a trip to the playground, and make sure your home is child-proofed before they ever set foot indoors. It's not very considerate of this woman's sister to just assume that she and the kiddos are always welcome. If she doesn't change her ways, she may find that the visits become less and less frequent.

That's totally reasonable, right?
I don't think it's too much to ask for a guest to announce their visit beforehand! Some people don't mind when guests show up because they're "just in the neighborhood." But whenever that happens, there's a mad scramble to quickly clean up and to find your guest something to eat. It's way more relaxing for everyone involved if there's even like, 2 hours of heads-up before showing up at the front door. And this person just wants a day's advance notice, which seems 100% reasonable. Let's hope her sister feels the same way, so that her relationship with her sister, niece, and nephew can flourish under these nicer conditions.
