Everybody has slightly different approaches to destressing, although in this day and age, they are likely to have one thing in common.

For most people, the first thing they do when they want to decompress is take a look at the screen that they keep in their pocket. Our phones are kind of a paradox in that they are a portal to everything that is so wonderfully distracting that we forget about all the worries that we have, but they also have the potential to get us into a doomscrolling habit that exposes everything that seems to be wrong with the world.

The negativity is not always that difficult to avoid if you know how. It is not realistic to eradicate it completely, but at least there are people out there who can occasionally put a funny spin on it. The invention of memes is a blessing in this way, in that even the darkest of topics can be treated with humor to seem less overwhelming. They show that nothing is truly off limits when we have a determination to turn despair into entertainment. 

Memes do not always have to cover these edgy topics, though. They can also just offer up some fluff to stuff our brains with that drowns out the other stuff for the time being.
