  • My neighbor who I was 100% ready to hate turned out to be the reason my dog is alive right now

I moved into my house about eight months ago and pretty quickly decided my next door neighbor was going to be A Problem. He's in his 60s, let's call him Ron, and he is genuinely always outside. Morning, evening, weekends, doesn't matter.
  • Always in the yard, always watching, always with this expression like he's cataloguing everything you do. I smiled at him twice and got a single nod both times. My friend came over once
  • and Ron literally stood by his fence and just observed her parking. It was unsettling honestly.

  • So I had written him off as the classic cranky guy who's going to complain about everything eventually. Last Tuesday I left for work at my usual time and my dog Pepper was in the backyard
  • like always. She has water, shade, she's fine for a few hours. Around 10am Ron apparently noticed she was acting strange through the fence slats, like wobbly and laying down in a weird spot she never uses. He tried knocking on my door, got nothing obviously,

  • and then somehow tracked down my number through our other neighbor to call me. I genuinely did not recognize the number and almost didn't pick up. He told me very calmly that something looked wrong with my dog and that he'd already called
  • an animal emergency clinic nearby to ask what signs to watch for. Pepper had gotten into something toxic in the yard. The vet said another hour and it would have been a very different conversation.

  • Ron and I had coffee on Saturday. Turns out he watches the neighborhood so carefully because his own dog was stolen from his yard twelve years ago
  • and he never got her back. He's not creepy, he's just someone who never stopped paying. attention.

  • TraditionalStop89... Ron sounds like an absolute legend, I hope Pepper is doing ok now?
  • chunkychickmunk Every neighborhood needs a Ron. They are a bit odd, but they see and know everything that goes on and are a thousand times better than any security system.
  • Usually it is an older gentleman. I've been blessed to have my own Ron in two neighborhoods now. Is Pepper ok?

  • cbelt3 . The best security system is always an observant retiree. They are often bored, and have taken on the job of guardian and news reporter for the village/neighborhood. They are not malignant, and need to be celebrated and cherished. Well done, Ron !
  • Bratchan Oh god that last bit got me.. his dog stolen and now he helped you and your dog.
  • -brigidsbookofkells my father is a Ron, except he talks to everyone and snow blows for his neighbors when they are sick or working late.

  • Everyone loves him, it just bugs my mother who can't be bothered to interact with strangers, when he's peering out the window and finds out who is divorcing, retiring, had surgery etc. And of course he knows all the dogs
