Back when I was young, I had a cat that hung out in my family's backyard. It wasn't our cat; my sister was allergic, so cats were forbidden. But this grey, semi-stray feline captured my heart and soul so strongly that I would cancel plans with my friends to hang out in the grass with sweet ol' Pookie. This cat was skittish, strange, and sort of alien, but when she got to know you and trusted you, she lay on her side and pawed at your shoelaces like a kitten again, meowing happily and closing her eyes in the midmorning sun.
Cats are funny that way. They tend to love those who match their feline energy, meeting humans halfway with their affections and stringently holding back any excess love until they know they can trust us.
