ive worked so many retail/customer service jobs over the past few years, bouncing around depending on my needs while in school, and after two coffee shops, a daycare, a clothing store, a chain pet store, and
  • a handful of internships, its in the deli and bakery department that i have officially found the worst coworker. candace (not real name) had a reputation before it
  • even met her. one day, i clocked in as per usual, and my other coworkers IMMEDIATELY told me that the new girl already put in her two weeks. apparently, she only needed 2 paychecks (weekly pay

  • period) so she could buy a plane ticket. i never found out to where, unfortunately, but hopefully far, far away from me. she was apparently in her early forties, but she
  • behaved like a teenager and looked like she was fifty- plus. every time she was asked to do something, she would go, "i dont know how to do that! no ones teaching me anything because im. only gonna be here for two

  • weeks." the only thing she ended up doing her whole time in the deli was slicing meat for customers. didnt help prepare food or stock shelves. wouldnt pull backstock from the freezer because its "too cold". she
  • wouldnt even do the dishes. i remember a particular shift that was super busy behind the counter. everyone was running around trying to clean for closing and still help customers get

  • sandwiches, deli meats, sweets from the bakery department, etc. dishes were piling up in the sink, and candace was just kinda... wandering around.
  • i was writing on a cake for a customer when i noticed she wasnt doing anything to help close. i asked her if she could get a jump start on the dishes, and she said "uhg, i dont wanna do that, ill get all wet. besides, my
  • shift ends in 20 mins and no one showed me how to do this." i said something along. the lines of, "well, youre on the clock, and it would be really helpful if you could. even get a few pots done before you leave." she

  • declined. i told my other coworker, stacy, what candace had said. somehow, stacy convinced candace to at least stand in front of the sink. i'm still decorating this

  • "no one even showed me how to do this, how am i supposed to clean dishes when no one told me how??" i remember being so mad, i squeezed the piping bag i
  • was holding so hard that half of it squirted onto the counter. im usually kind and relatively patient, but that last comment really ticked me off. "its... the dishes," i said.
  • "you scrub it with soap, rinse it off, and put it to the side to dry. its not that hard. its also your job." i dont quite remember what happened next, but 20 mins and four (4) plates later, she was gone.

  • later that week, i was taking my break and sitting in the cafe area of my store. candace saunters up to me (while im off the clock) and goes, "hey, girl!" like we're friends or something. we're not.
  • i said hi back without looking up from my phone. she said something else i didnt pay attention to. i was literally sitting there, tuning her out, until she said something about her kids,
  • and how "not many people. guess that id have two kids in their twenties", which she said with a smirk. im in my twenties, and my parents are about her age.

  • they look at LEAST ten years younger than her. i shrugged and said, "okay" she continued, "like, a lot of people think i look young for my age"
  • she didnt. i said, "thats nice," and went back to my phone. eventually she got the hint and meandered away.
  • every time there was a rush, she'd hide in the walk-in, and then eventually come. out and say "god that sucked. good thing im only here for another few days," or, "i cant believe yall do this all the time. i cant wait

  • to leave." in fact, every time there was a minor inconvenience, she was rubbing it in our faces that she was on her way out. and then one day, she was gone. she came, she got her
  • two paychecks, and flew away. good riddance. i wish i knew more about the plane. tickets. i wish i never met her at all.
