As the author mentions, it's worth acknowledging that not every person in this situation would be willing to go to court over this. Perhaps they don't want to burn a bridge, or maybe they don't have the finances to afford a good lawyer.
Still, even though this woman had the resources at her disposal to pursue this case, there are lessons to be learned from her tenacity in the face of her former employer's mostly empty intimidation tactics.

Even if you can't go to court over something like this, knowing your labor laws inside and out will be crucial for negotiations.
In a different scenario, the employee might have been able to avoid a lawsuit altogether just by reiterating her knowledge of the rules to her ex-boss. For some employers, that might be enough to get them to stop playing games.
After all, if they want to play the intimidation game, who's to say that you can't give them a taste of their own medicine in return?
