Boss confirms promotion with $67k salary, then pays employee $43k instead: 'Now I'm being made redundant'

  • Employer confirmed £50k salary in writing, then paid £32k instead – now being made redundant. Do I have a claim?

I'm in England now but started working remotely form Scotland. I was on a grad scheme and passed my exam October 2025 to "graduate" out of it.
  • After the call I got an email from HR saying: * New base salary of £50,000 effective 1st October * Promotion confirmed * Progression * to Level 2 Said a change in terms letter would follow That was all in writing.
  • Here's where things take a downturn...

Then shortly after I got another email saying actually because I'm on a "Glasgow remote contract" my salary would be £32,000 instead.

  • I never signed anything agreeing to £32k, never got the change in terms letter for £50k, and I argued that my contract states London as my home office (which it does).
  • There's no mention of "Glasgow remote" in my contract. I've been paid £32k since October. Now I'm being made redundant and they've calculated my redundancy + notice based on £32k.

  • The difference between £50k and £32k is about £18k a year, so roughly 6k underpaid since October, plus redundancy calculations are lower because of it.
  • I haven't signed any settlement agreement yet. Do I potentially have a claim for unlawful deduction of wages or breach of contract?

  • Or can they just say the £50k email was a mistake and override it? Trying to figure out if I should speak to an employment solicitor before signing anything.
  • Thanks.
  • edit: I've been employed for over 2 years (5 years this april) Just looking for some advice because this feels really off and I'm not sure if I'm overthinking it.

  • People had some pretty serious questions for this person

UnpredictiveList You worked for 5 months on £32k? No further follow ups after your intial argument? Then I would say you've agreed to the terms by continuing to work there.
  • TheDisapproving... Was there an actual meeting of minds where £50K was discussed, or was that email the first mention of it? Did you formally object to the second email, raising a grievance that they changed the terms without your agreement?

  • In other words, did they actually change the agreement, or did they just put the wrong number in one email? Either way, you'll have an uphill struggle getting any result after 5 months, but if the only reference to £50K is that one email that was corrected shortly after, you've got basically no chance.
  • ImBonRurgundy Quite a bit of detail missing but it sounds like they sent you the wrong letter and then quickly corrected it. I don't think you have a case tbh
