Trade school graduate refuses to give $8K she inherited from her grandpa to her 6-year-old half-sister: 'My mom said I was lucky, and my sister doesn't have anyone setting up funds for her.'

The best time to start saving money was 15 years ago, and the second-best time is today. You can't go back and change your past horrible financial decision, but you can choose to spend and save your money smarter than you did yesterday. That includes living below your means so you actually have the funds to set some money aside, paying off your debt, not spending half of your paycheck on frivolous things, and not telling other people in your life what you're doing with your money. If you go around saying that you have even $1000 in savings, someone is going to listen and want a piece of that.

You need to put your own oxygen mask on before helping others. In financial terms, that means you shouldn't be giving away money until you have control over your own finances. If you can't pay your bills and save any money, you don't have any business giving money to family members who ask for it. You can technically do whatever you want with your money, but doing so would be to your detriment. It's also important to save for your own retirement before saving for your kids' college. You have to take care of yourself first!

The young woman in this story was set up for success by her grandpa. He put some money aside for her, and she used that money to pay for trade school. Her mom knows about this money, and wanted her to give the remaining $8000 to her half-sister to set her up for the future. I think the adult who is moving to a new state needs $8000 of her money more than a 1st grader.
