Dissociation is a strange and often misunderstood experience. It can feel like stepping slightly outside of yourself — as if the world has grown distant, muffled, or unreal. For some people, it’s brief and subtle: zoning out during a long conversation or arriving somewhere without remembering parts of the drive. For others, it can feel deeper, like watching life unfold from behind a pane of glass. At its core, dissociation is often a protective response. The brain, when overwhelmed by stress, anxiety, or strong emotion, sometimes creates distance to help cope. It’s not a conscious decision. It’s more like an internal safety mechanism, dialing down intensity when things feel too much. In that sense, it isn’t inherently “bad.” It’s the mind trying to regulate itself.
