When we hoomans were children, visiting the zoo was the highlight of our summers. We'd stroll around with a lollipop in hand, extra sunblock on our noses, and a cool hat that had one of the zoo animals printed on it. It felt as though life couldn't be more perfect, especially because our animal-loving selves got to spend a whole day with the furry, scaly, feathery creatures we hoped we'd become friends with one day. Even though our friendship with these wild fellas might be kept at a distance because of zoo-safe plexiglass, just being in their presence is enough for us.
When was the last time you visited the zoo? Do you have a favorite exhibit that you sprint to when the gates open for the day? A highlight of my time at the zoo has got to be at Ueno Zoo in Japan. I saw not just one panda, but two for the first time! They're just as fluffy and sleepy as you have probably imagined, and it was the highlight of my entire trip. Pandas are known for being clumsy fellas, and for the duration of my time at their exhibit, they were rolling around on the floor and missing their step every five seconds. When they weren't doing that, you already know they were cuddling with one another while they waited for their next meals! I can't say I blame them, though…
Zoos bring out the best in most people, not only children. In fact, an adult's childlike wonder returns when they see all the little schoolchildren standing on each other's shoulders to get a good look at the lion exhibit or the red panda sanctuary. What a time to be alive! Since it's still too frigid to walk about the zoos we know and love, watching animals from the comfort of our own homes is the next best thing. Scroll below to get a taste of what spring and summer will be like, animals and all!
