There were influencers, but not in the hyper-commercial, hyper-structured way we see today. The internet felt playful rather than strategic.

And culturally, 2016 was a certain experimental age. Fashion was experimental, and people thought their straightened hair and skinny jeans would last furrever. Pop music was glossy and communal — songs you remember hearing everywhere, tied to summer evenings and group chats. There was still a belief in forward motion.
