    Gym member insists teen girl get off treadmill, Mom defends teen: 'I can see where her daughter gets her entitlement from'

    You just want to get through your workout as quick as possible, but that's not going to happen when another gymgoer is hogging the treadmill without even using it. 

    Isn't that kind of thing infuriating? Of course you try not to bother other people during their workouts, but man, do they do some annoying stuff. Some people wear earbuds with their music playing so loud that it's a tinny whine in your ears. Some folks will plop down on a weight bench so that they can eat a snack, take a drink break, or text their friends. A lot of people have started recording their workouts too, so when you're at the gym, all sweaty and in baggy clothes, you might just wind up in someone's video. Somehow, these people flock to the gym during the busiest hours, leaving everyone else in the gym to try and do their workouts around them.

    • Like this person — they just wanted to use a treadmill. Those are maybe the most popular machines at most gyms. They're really accessible, almost anyone can use them, whether they're walking at a slooowww 2 miles per hour, or sprinting at 6 MPH. Sometimes you do just want to stroll along with your friend next to you, maybe watching TV and talking about your weekend plans. But one of those unspoken gym rules is that if you're on a machine, you'd better be actually using it, not just loitering around the gym. 

      I think most people are just kind of oblivious when they do things like this. Like, they think they're working out, but they're kind of daydreaming. So when they're called out, they jump to the defensive, refusing to admit they were slacking.

      AITAH for expecting a girl to get off a treadmill in the gym?

      The gym I go to doesn't have a lot of treadmills and I've recently started running.

      I went to the gym with my partner last night and all of the treadmills were in use.

      I used some weight machines to start then went back to the treadmills. I noticed there was a girl just sat on the treadmill while her friend was using the treadmill next to her.

      She'd been there for at least 15 mins not using it so I went up and asked if she was planning to use it.

      She said she was with her friend but I just said she can wit next to her friends machine instead of taking up machines from people who want to use them, She shrugged her shoulders and refused to move.

      A women comes over and asks what's happening so I explain it. She said she's the girls mother and that I shouldn't be telling her daughter to move.

      Ugh, why did the Mom have to defend her daughter over a simple request like this?

      She said her daughter is feeling to sit there if she wants and that she's doing nothing wrong.

      I just said I can see where her daughter gets her entitlement from. She said I was out of order for commenting on her parent but I just said she should be a better parent if she can't handle any criticism.

      A member of staff came over and when I explained why was going on, asked the daughter to move off the treadmill or leave the gym.

      This person has the right advice

      Mesapholis A member of staff came over and when I explained why was going on, asked the daughter to move off the treadmill or leave the gym. Totally right way to handle it, this is a gym not a social hangout for kids with no parenting NTA

      Staff members at gyms must deal with this all the time. I can't even imagine how many times per week they have to politely ask oblivious gymgoers to stop texting and use that weight bench, or stop yapping with a friend and just walk on that elliptical. Why is this so hard for people to grasp? If you're wrong, you're wrong. Not everything has to be a big deal — you could just apologize and move on with your life, never to think about it again.

      Hmm, should this person have talked to the teen first, or just got a worker to handle it from the get-go?
