The idea that black cats bring bad luck is less an ancient curse and more a historical misunderstanding with terrible PR.
In medieval Europe, black cats became tangled up in superstition because people associated them with witches and the supernatural - largely due to fear of the unknown and a tendency to blame mysterious events on whatever looked the most dramatic in candlelight. Sadly, that reputation stuck, even though in other cultures black cats were (and still are) considered lucky.
In Japan and parts of the UK, for example, they’re symbols of prosperity and good fortune. Science, meanwhile, confirms black cats possess no mystical powers beyond expert napping. In fact, their dark coloration comes from melanin, the same pigment that protects against UV damage and is linked to stronger immune responses in some animals.
So not only are black cats not bad luck - they’re literally built to be resilient little panthers of health and charm.

Cats love warmth the way humans love Wi-Fi: instinctively and with great urgency.
Domestic cats descended from desert-dwelling ancestors, and their bodies are still optimized for heat retention and comfort in warm environments. A cat’s normal body temperature runs higher than ours - around 38-39°C (100-102.5°F) - so what feels cozy to us can feel slightly chilly to them. Seeking sunny spots, laptops, heaters, or freshly folded laundry helps them conserve energy because staying warm means burning fewer calories to maintain body heat. Warmth also relaxes muscles and promotes restful sleep, which is crucial for animals that spend much of their day in light dozing cycles.
That’s why a cat will migrate across the house following sunbeams like a tiny solar-powered philosopher. When your cat steals your seat the second you stand up, they’re not being impolite - they’re practicing thermodynamic efficiency with whiskers.
