Every time employee takes a PTO day they still end up 40 hours/week to cover it, nullifying the PTO: 'I should've worked 24 hours but I worked double that'

  • If I take a PTO day, but still end up working over 40 hours that week, I didn't take PTO.

    Whenever I try to take a day off to make a three day weekend I end up working longer hours to compensate for being out of the office... So how is that PTO?
  • A few weeks back we had a federal holiday here in the states. I added a PTO day afterwards to make a four day weekend. The remaining W-F had me working 43 hours. In three fucking days.
  • Tell me, how is that fair that I had to use a PTO day and a HOL day, but still worked over 40 hours that week. I should've worked 24 hours but I worked double that. Also salaried so no chance of OT.

    ccarr313 If my wife takes PTO, and they schedule up to 40 on other days, she still gets paid the PTO. Sounds like you're getting scammed.

  • jmckinl It doesn't sound like you're actually getting PTO. Been there and done that. What are you measured on? What would happen if the work didn't get done now and needed to be deferred until the following week?

  • Itstotallysafe Original Poster's Reply I'm measured on a number of things, including turnaround time on paperwork, customer satisfaction, and project profitability. If I defer paperwork it will just build up as there's no space in the schedule for down time. There are others who have the same position as me constant getting called out for being late with paperwork and their performance reviews suffer because of it.

  • Itstotallysafe Original Poster's Reply I have bills to pay. This job pays decently on paper and wasn't always like this. Its just getting worse and worse as they try to squeeze every last bit of effort out of us.

  • LacyLove I am salaried and when I take a day of PTO I am not expected to work longer to make up the time off. It sounds like a company problem.
  • shawnaeatscats Yeah they're getting scammed. If we put in PTO then exceed 40 hours for that week, the PTO gets deducted. In other words: if I pit in for 8h off on Friday then work 36h M-Th, 4 hours will be removed from my PTO submission so that my time worked for the week does not exceed 40 hours
  • CaptPotter47 Just don't do that. Your salary. Set you time expectations and start wrapping up the work you are doing 20-30 mins before you plan to leave.

  • voxam72 You need to look into whether you actually qualify for OT. Salary doesn't automatically mean no OT; there are several factors. I suggest contacting your local labor department for the regulations, as things can vary wildly between municipalities.
  • HalfSoul30 Wouldn't you still be paid more? The over 40 hours plus the pto pay? Edit: just saw salary paid. Just say no. They obviously need you, so what are they going to do?
  • xboxchick311 If you work 43 hours in 3 days, why would you still claim the PTO? Turn in your time sheet with that PTO day as unpaid time.

  • Darth Revan1138 The only time I work more hours when I take PTO, is when I don't have enough PTO hours to cover the full time off. Otherwise-bye!
