Adulthood throws a curveball now and then, reminding us that our little plans and our little notions are just a speck in the universe. Cool! It's for this reason, though, that people must remember to live in the moment, because we don't know what tomorrow brings. A job could be lost, an ankle could be sprained, or a fender bender insurance battle could steal your free time for the next 8 months: You don't know!
This may feel rather dismal, but it's the darkness that always puts the light in better perspective. Without the trials and tribulations of the world, how would we know when to celebrate the little wins? Catching all the green lights on the way to work may seem trivial and silly, or rather, a break from the usual unluckiness, but this could be the tiny fist bump or serotonin boost that gets a person through the workday. A particularly hot shower on a cold day revives the senses, and a good parking spot at the grocery store makes you feel like a king. If only for a moment, the present moment, these good vibes empower the mind and remind folks to stay grateful.
Humor has a way of brightening the abyss. My mom always used to tell me, especially when I was a pouty little kid, that when I was upset, I should force a smile until it became real. It sounds stupid, and maybe a little insane, but the absurdity of how it feels to peel your lips off of your teeth, angrily gritting until that ridiculousness transforms into a laugh. Suddenly, my mom's technique didn't feel so stupid after all, because, despite myself, I could never withstand the urge to laugh at my own plight. I suppose it actually works, huh?
Laugh at the triviality of the blunders and the silliness of the plights, because sometimes a wee sense of humor in the world is enough to curl up a genuine smile, or at least, a snort laugh. Predicaments have a way of always returning to perfect lives, but the celebration-worthy times are just as common.
People just need to get better at noticing the mini shining moments; they're easier to miss than you'd think.
