Their sense of smell is crucial here, too: cats have about 200 million odor sensors, and if food doesn’t pass the sniff test, it might as well not exist. Hunger can also make cats cranky, since their metabolism is designed for frequent small meals rather than feast-and-famine cycles. Add in the fact that cats can associate food with affection and safety, and suddenly it makes sense why your presence makes kibble taste better.
To a cat, eating together isn’t just nourishment - it’s bonding, reassurance, and a shared ritual, preferably with commentary.
